Why Shot Preparation Matters
Shot preparation is one of the most overlooked fundamentals in golf. However, it is often the difference between inconsistent play and reliable performance. In simple terms, how you prepare before each shot directly affects how well you execute it.
Golf is a mental and physical game. As a result, your preparation influences:
- Focus and Attention
- Alignment and setup
- Swing confidence
- Shot consistency
Pre-Shot Routine
Players need to build a consistent pre-shot routine on the range using aiming sticks so player can make the routine automatic and gain confidence in their process.
Below is an example of a Pre-Shot routine:
- Practice Swing to feel the correct tension level for ball swing.
- Take AIM – stand 6 PACES directly behind ball in line with long target. Pick a short target 2-3’ in front of ball to aim clubface to.
- Walk to side of ball, (get belly button lined up across from ball) keeping your eyes on short target. Set the clubface to short target.
- Take grip, stance and posture.
- Look at long target to double check aim & alignment, and to know where to swing to.
- Swing thought – complete the backswing – complete the finish
In conclusion, shot preparation sets the foundation for a successful swing.
